The Shining 3D FreeScan Combo is a compact and lightweight handheld 3D scanner with a dual light source, ensuring highly accurate scanning results and fast speed in different 3D scanning scenarios. Combining blue laser and infrared VCSEL technologies, the device is an addition to the Shining 3D lineup of metrology solutions and can be used for inspection, reverse engineering, additive manufacturing, and other applications in automotive, aerospace, machinery, medicine, and other industries.
For more advanced version with an improved laser projection system and higher data acquisition speed, check out the FreeScanCombo+ model.
The compact size of the scanner along with the weight of only 620 grams allow for convenient use of the Combo in digitizing objects of various sizes, and its ergonomic design, metal housing, and wrist strap make for industrial-grade durability and reliable operation. The scanner provides a maximum scan speed of 1,860,000 points/s in the laser mode and up to 2,250,000 points/s while using the IR light source. Due to its four scanning modes, the FreeScan Combo is good for scanning large objects as well as precise capturing of fine details and deep holes. The VCSEL technology allows for body scanning and fast marker-free scanning of objects with rich geometry. The device shows reliable results when it comes to digitizing black and reflective surfaces. For better performance in the bright light, the user can enable the Outdoor mode.
Below you can see the examples of scans captured with the Shining 3D FreeScan Combo.
The FreeScan Combo provides metrology-grade accuracy that can achieve 0.02 mm in laser scanning mode with the volumetric accuracy of 0.02 + 0.033 mm/m. The scanner generates a point cloud with a point distance of 0.05–3 mm while using the blue laser light, and 0.2–3 mm in the IR scanning mode, creating highly precise, detailed scans suitable for professional use.
To optimize the scanning process and increase its efficiency, the user can choose between four available scan modes. Scanning with the blue laser light source can be performed in of the three modes: multi-line scan with 26 crossed laser lines for scanning large objects, single-line scan with a single laser line and optimized lens angle for deep hole scanning, and parallel-line scan using 7 laser lines for scanning smaller areas with a high level of detail. The multi-line scanning mode allows for efficient scanning of dark and reflective surfaces. For better results, it is recommended to enable the Reflective option. All the three laser modes require markers for data alignment. The user can select the resolution, choosing between high, medium, and low levels.
The fourth scanning mode employs the IR VCSEL technology and can be used for both portrait and object scanning. The Portrait mode includes Hair mode for better hair capturing, although it increases the overall noise level. Both Portrait and Object modes allow selecting the required resolution, while in the Object mode, the user can also choose between different alignment methods: feature, hybrid (geometry + markers), and global markers alignment. Choosing the feature alignment mode allows the user to scan without markers to speed up the preparation and scanning process.
The recommended working distance for the FreeScan Combo is 300 mm. While scanning in the IR mode, the user can adjust the working distance in the range of 160–1400 mm for the Portrait mode, and 160–600 mm for the Object mode. The maximum field of view of the scanner is 520 x 510 mm in the laser scan mode, and 430 x 430 mm in the IR mode.
Control buttons are located on the top back side of the scanner. There are power and scanning distance indicators, the latter showing if the scanner is too far or too close to the object. The Scanning button in the center allows switching between preview, scan, and pause functions, while double-clicking calls out the menu screen. A long press allows the user to switch the light source. There are also buttons to adjust camera brightness and zoom buttons around the Scanning button.
Before the first use, the user needs to connect the scanner to the PC via a supplied aviation cable, and calibrate the device using the calibration board that comes with the scanner.
The Shining 3D FreeScan Combo works with the proprietary FreeScan software which is an all-in-one solution for the whole scanning process, starting with calibrating the scanner to advanced mesh editing functions and measurement options.
The scanned data can be saved in OBJ, STL, PLY, ASC, and 3MF file formats and directly imported into third-party software such as Geomagic Control X, Verisurf, Einsense Q, Geomagic Design X, Geomagic Essentials, and Solid Edge SHINING 3D Edition.
