The following picture contains several test prints showcasing the printer’s performance with different layer thickness settings. For example, this 2m-tall bottle with 2 perimeters has been printed at 1.2 mm layer height and took only 17.5 hours. Despite the resolution, it boasts a rather decent surface quality. This particular model used 8.2 kg of filament. 

Print quality

The Modix BIG-2Meter Everest is an FDM 3D printer that can print layers at 600 micron. This way one can produce parts with relatively smooth exterior surfaces, which is more than enough for most applications of life-size models. 

Dedicated to fast and efficient large-format 3D printing, the Everest model is equipped with the high-flow Griffin Ultra hotend capable of printing thick layers with up to 500 g of material per hour. This enables rapid production of impressively tall objects, while significantly reducing total print times.

Due to the improved motors on the X axis (compared to NEMA-17 motors for the Modix V3 3D printers), the BIG-2Meter Everest provides the accelerated travel speed of up to 350 mm/s and maximum printing speed of up to 250 mm/s.

Starting with the Generation 4, the Modix devices come by default with the electronic expansion board Duex 5, with a dedicated stepper motor driver allocated for each Z and X axis motor. Thanks to this thoughtful upgrade, the printer offers a full set of automated calibration routines, including automated bed tilt, bed leveling, gantry alignment, and Z offset calibration making for enhanced printing precision.

Designed with a reinforced frame made of strong 4080 mm profiles (double the size of the BIG-Meter model), the Modix Everest is capable of printing well even without the enclosure, although this would hardly be preferable, as the included enclosure helps maintain the internal ambient temperature. In addition, the bed is attached to the HIWIN rails installed on the Z profiles, which stabilizes the entire frame while moving down during the printing.

The standard variant of the Modix BIG-2Meter Everest is engineered with a single nozzle. However, it is supplied with several Volcano brass nozzles of 0.4, 0.6, and 0.8 mm in diameter. It also supports 1.0 and 1.2 mm sizes (available as an optional add-on). Moreover, the printer can be equipped with the IDEX module for multi-material printing of complex internal geometries. This extreme flexibility provides the user with wider design capabilities.

Materials

Thanks to the improved extruder structure, the Modix BIG-2Meter Everest can print with PLA, PETG, PVA, ABS, ASA, PC, Nylon, TPU, Woodfill, Carbon composite, and other specialty materials from almost any manufacturer.

For more complex projects, one can use the optionalModix IDEX add-on. It includes a secondary printing subsystem, consisting of a Griffin print head, clog detector, PTFE, and spool mount, and enables high-quality multi-color and soluble material printing.

All the Modix V4 3D printers come with a default clog detector that can easily detect filament run-out, under-extrusion, and hotend clogs, which allows the user to quickly fix the problem and avoid negative impact on the quality of the printed items.

Build volume

The enormous build area of 38.2 x 40.6 x 78.7 inches (970 x 1030 x 2000 mm) lets you print just about anything. Thanks to its incredible height, the Modix BIG-2Meter Everest eliminates the need for assembling parts from multiple smaller prints. By enabling printing of objects up to 2 m tall, it drastically reduces the time spent on gluing and assembly, leading to stronger, seamless final products.

Printer controls and software

The Modix BIG-2Meter Everest 3D printer comes with a 7-inch tilting touchscreen with emergency stop button for smooth real-time interaction. It also features USB and SD card slots as well as a Wi-Fi module with easy web-access interface for remote operation. Thus, one can easily transfer their 3D models from a computer via a USB cable, SD card, or share them over Wi-Fi using a PC or a mobile phone.

The Modix Everest supports almost any type of 3D model format. This means that you can use the slicing software of your choice to prepare files for printing, namely, Cura, Slic3r, Simplify3D, and many others.

Look and feel

The Modix BIG-2Meter Everest is available in black with gray and red trimmings. Its stylish look and superior adaptability make it ideal for any professional and hobby applications. 

The printer dimensions are 53.4 x 56.9 x 120.8 in (1356 x 1445 x 3068 mm). It weighs approximately 520.3 lb (236 kg). The spool holder is mounted inside the machine.

For safety purposes, Modix have modified the top lid of the machine to hold the filament spools inside the printer. Replacing spools and other ongoing maintenance and assembly will require working at heights, so please check your local regulations for the required safety equipment and instructions. The manufacturer recommends using a platform ladder, which is more convenient and safer than a standard one, especially when climbing up with a spool in one’s hands. Please note that Modix does not include a ladder or other safety equipment with the printer.
